"Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a very common autoimmune disease. The immune system is dysregulated by so-called misdirected autoantibodies that attack the body's own cells. In the course of MS, this leads to a chronic infection of the spinal cord and the central nervous system. 

The symptoms usually come in episodes lasting from hours to days. At the beginning, visual and/or sensory disturbances are typical. In unfavourable courses, balance disorders and paralysis may also occur. 

For symptomatic treatment, anti-inflammatory drugs (especially cortisone) are typically used in episodes or as long-term therapy, which usually have strong side effects and must be carefully monitored.
