Ayahuasca
By Satesh Narain November 22, 2016
Ayahuasca, commonly referred as ‘madre de la Medicina’, is an ancient medicine that has surfaced in modern times and is continuing to gain acceptance and awareness in the West.
I asked the Universe on how could someone like me from the West could reveal the nature of sacred medicine that has the potential to capture imagination and opinions worldwide. I put on my Shamanic chain blessed by Don Agustín Rivas Vásquez in his Temple, chant some of Don Agustín’s Icaros, consumed some sacred Ayahuasca, to come under its influence, shook the charapa (a gift from Shaman Don Luis Panduro – nephew of Don Agustin) and solicited the spirit of the plant to help me to write.
“El Ayahuasca nace el la tierra y crece en el cuerpo.”
“Born in the land and grows in the body.”
Maestro / Curandero Don Cesar Agustín Rivas Gonzales (Viejo)
In South American countries, Ayahuasca is known by different names according to the region and local language. In Colombia, it is called yagé or yajé. In Brasil, the brew it is affiliated with the Santo Daime Churches and known as caapi or cipó.
Ayahuasca is a sacred natural plant medicine that was used for thousands of years by the native Indians in South America to connect with the universe / cosmos. It is “la madre de la medicina,” the mother of medicines. It is imbued with a spirit, called “La Serpente.” It is taken during sacred ceremonies and acts as an intermediate link to the high psyche of the human consciousness. It also connects us to the other dimensions within this reality.
The traditional brew of Ayahuasca is made from two plants - the Ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi vine) and the leaves of the Chacruna (Psychotria viridis) plant. Ayahuasca is a vine, meaning the vine of death, in the ancient ways and signifies re-birth in the next day. One is not the same after taking the sacred medicine. Each time one takes it, a bit of the darkness is discarded or cleared.
The chacruna leaves have the natural DMT (dimethyltryptamine) properties that induces visions. Some may call it hallucinations, but the shamans I have encountered referred to the experiences as visions and not hallucinations. They say that it is different in that the visions are always remembered.
The spirit of Ayahuasca
The spirit of Ayahuasca, called “La Serpente” grows in the body and aids in the transformation of the human psyche. Another similar analogy is the kundalini force in the body, as referenced in Eastern thoughts on yoga, “the dormant uncoiled energy source” in the body, which is stored at the base of the spine.
Ancient similarities
It is quite interesting that not only in the Inca culture similarities are seen in many ancient cultures, such as the symbol of the serpent or cobra representing their thoughts. The symbols are also seen with the ancient Indians from the East and the Egyptians. Similarly, the serpent is seen in the ancient Mayan culture and in their ancient architectures. The phenomenon of the illusory appearance of the Mayan feathered serpent god of life and rebirth, Kukulkán, is seen twice each year at the spring and fall equinoxes at the centre of the famous Chichén Itzá, Pyramid of Kukulkán in Mexico. At the bottom or the base of the stairway of the Pyramid of Kukulkán is the architecture of a large carved head of a serpent. Thousands of people gathered to see the equinox sunsets, the light and shadow effects of the stairway of the pyramid create an illusory effect of the serpent god Kukulán, slowly descending from the top of the temple to the ground.
Ancient Symbol Used as a Symbol of Modern Healthcare – Medicine
In is interesting to note that even today this ancient symbol of the serpent as is represented in the Rod of Asclepius (Greek) which is used in many countries as the symbol of healthcare associations and medicine, symbolizing healing.
Psychology of Ayahuasca
Some Shamans say that Ayahuasca can heal 70 % of illness.
As mentioned before, the Ayahuasca plant has a spirit, it is a Master teacher and comes alive, grows in the body and teaches us. It a medicine with a life force and it has psychology in its components. It aids in the reconnection of the soul and helps clean up the layers of psychological darkness that envelopes the soul. It is the medicine for the soul.
In Perú, healing is a combined process of working on the multidimensional layers of one’s being. Shamans and Curanderos, like Don Agustín (Viejo) use Ayahuasca in sacred ceremonies, along with a daily treatment consisting of a combination of natural plant medicine from the Amazon Jungle to treat specific illnesses. In addition, Don Agustín unravels the mystery of that person and delves into the origin of their problem with his insights. With an abundance of love, compassion and courage, a great Shaman and Curandero like Don Agustín is able to open the aperture of the soul to trigger the healing process. Then he works on the psychology of the person, encouraging them to make life changes in the way their perceive reality.
Preparation of Ayahuasca
The preparation of this brew is very time consuming, it takes a full day, starting early in the morning, until late in the evening to prepare this brew at the required concentration. Sometimes it can take two days for a stronger concentration. While in Peru, I was fortunate to take part in the preparation of the sacred medicine.
Ayahuasca was also used traditionally in the past to see the future. In the past some tribes used it the night before they went to war, so that they could see where their enemies were. Also, some used it to see future projects.
Awakening through Ayahuasca and reference to Soma in the Vedas
In the Vedas of India, the most ancient scriptures known to man, Soma references were quoted in many places. Like most Sanskrit words, there are multiple meanings depending on the context. The foremost meaning of soma was probably made in reference to the creator of the universe. In a Vedic context, Soma intoxication is purification – enlightenment, aligning oneself with the Supreme consciousnesses, reaching higher stages of intellect / enhancement of intellect, destroying ego and negative tendencies.
In the context of awakening, it was mentioned that the fourth most powerful and fastest method of kundalini awakening is aushadhi. Aushadhi is the method of awakening through the use of specific herbs. The specific mixture of the herbs was never revealed as it was not for all because of and the fear of it being misused and abused by those who were not qualified. It was not to intended to be taken by those who were not ready, nor to be taken by unqualified persons, but to be administered by a guru or qualified guide to those competent aspirants who had the discipline, the right attitude, good mental health, stable emotional state and good physical well being.
In the Vedic texts there are references to a substance called soma, a juice, which was extracted from a creeper plant (a vine that grows along another plant). This plant was picked on certain days of the dark lunar fortnight and it was buried underground in a pitcher until the full moon. On the full moon, the pitcher was removed and soma was prepared by extracting the juice. For centuries many from around the world have speculated and experimented of what this brew could be.
It was also mentioned that the South American Native Indians used a similar brew. From my experiences on the topic of Ayahuasca and on a romantic note, if Soma was used in the context of certain medicinal herbs, “The Drink of the Gods”, then I believe that Soma is Ayahuasca and it is the sacred medicine and a path / vehicle to aid in the rapid / quantum leap into deep states of higher consciousness.
La Magica
I have experienced 26 sacred ceremonies and have seen the effects of it and what it does. In addition, to my own experiences, I have seen what it does to others. La Magica in English, which is translated to magic, signifying mysterious tricks or illusion, is not the same in the Ayahuasca context. When reference is made to “La Magica” in the Spanish Ayahuasca context, it is the reference to the “truth,” the transformation of one’s personality with the aid of Ayahuasca, La Madre de la medicina - the mother of the medicines.
One can pretend as much as they like, with all the pretense and false imagery, but once they take ayahuasca, it takes the masks off and the individual confronts him / her self. In ceremonies, I have seen what it does to all, including to Yoga teachers and even Beauty Queens who dress beautifully in white clothing, wearing beautiful malas with beautiful smiles and cultured composure, believing everything has to do with one external bodily appearance.
Ayahuasca and Meditation
Ayahuasca and Meditation are the two medicines that can cleanse the traumas that are stored in the layers of the mind, including the subconscious mind.
It is said that about 80% of the illness is due to psychosomatic causes of the mind, thus plastic medicine alone will not work on / affect the layers of mind, but only on the gross mass of the body.
Ayahuasca Ceremonies
In ayahuasca ceremonies, I have seen many women including some in the Health Care and Psychology professions break down and cry all night, as deep buried emotions / traumas are revealed and come to the surface. Deep buried forms of abuse / sexual abuse when they were kids, teenager, adults from their father / parents, boy friend/s or partner / husband can be revealed – and come to the surface of the conscious mind during ceremonies.
Ayahuasca ceremonies can be very intense and they are not fun as seen on the Internet. Shamans from different traditions perform the ceremony differently. The most important, is finding a good Shaman to take part in the Ayahuasca ceremony, as not all Shamans work with Compassion, Love and White Light. We will touch on this point in more detail later.
As the ceremony starts, Ayahuasca is served in a cup to the participant. Usually, the effect takes some time, for some 20 to 45 minutes. Some may require another cup. A ceremony usually lasts about 3 to 5 hours, depending of the number of participants. As the ceremony starts and ayahuasca is taken, one sits with eyes closed or opens at times and the Shaman sings his Icaros. As time goes by, nauseating sensation is felt and the person throws up, feeling better afterwards. It is good to drink lots of water during the night, flushing out the liver to prevent dehydration, which can lead to a fever and headache the next day.
After one throwing up, it is at this point the visions starts to manifest. It is said, as we throw up, we are getting raid of the psychological traumas – emotions and as we go to the washroom to release, it is the physical illness that is being worked on.
After the ceremony, it takes about 6 to 8 hours for the ayahuasca effect to be “out of the body,” although it stays in the body for weeks. In addition, driving a motor vehicle is not permitted and one usually spends the rest of the night / morning sleeping over at the same location. Also, on the next day, participants should keep on drinking lots of water.
Each Ayahuasca ceremony is unique and different and they are not the same in terms of the experience. Not all the times are visions seen. Although it is quite normal not to have visions at times, this is not to say that the medicine is not working. Everyone has their own signature print and unique sets of emotions embroiled in their mind-field. Ayahuasca works on layers of the mind, like peeling the layers of an onion layer by layer before it reaches the core of the problem. Thus the Ayahuasca works even if there are no visions at the first time, it is doing exactly what is needed for that individual – peeling the layers to get to the core of the problem.
As for myself, I had some very profound experiences and visions, under the influence of Ayahuasca. At times, I can see the energy from others, sometimes I see the spirits too and at other times crossed over to the other dimensions in this reality, possibly even other realities or past life experiences. I do not know the truth on this phenomenon. Our intellect and ego only go as far as we are, and try to interpret the visions based on the stored information from our experiences, believes, doctrines, truths, etc.
We are multidimensional beings of gross matter, pranic force, mind, intellect and Spirit. Some things are of spirit nature and need to be understood in quietude. When the mind is quiet, the frontal cortex of the brain is in shut- down mode, the answers to questions, deep within the mind are answered or come to surface by themselves. It is, La Magica, the transformation of the personality.
Choosing a Shaman / Curandero
Probably, the most important is going to Shaman who is known to have love and compassion in his / her heart.
The fact is that many have died from taking ayahuasca and they may not be necessarily drug addicts / users, but as a result of toxic ayahuasca. Many foreigners go to Perú from various countries, such as France, Germany, Russia and others, from many countries that do not speak English, thus their tragedies may not reach the English News Media.
In Perú, it is a complete opposite culture in terms of the doctors and Healers than in the West. In South America, Shamans / Curanderos are not in support of each other in the profession. The contrast is in the West, doctors and Healers do not say negative - bad things about another doctor in the profession, whereas, in Peru, generally another Shaman maybe skeptical, have doubts or lack confidence in another Shaman or possibly be jealous. There are also many Shamans in Perú who have difficulty in finding love and compassion within themselves and do bad things (witchcraft) to others, including to other good Shamans, causing harm.
Don Agustín Rivas Vásquez, Don Agustín “Viejo” (son of Don Agustín Rivas Vásquez) and Don Luis Panduro (nephew of Don Agustín Rivas Vásquez) have all told me to be careful with the other Shamans and taking Ayahuasca in Iquitos. Later on, I experienced what they meant and I had a quite challenging experience. Thanks to God and all the good forces of Light and the guiding angels that I am safe and well.
Both Don Agustín and Viejo usually speak about love and the psychology of one’s internal being, with love as the key. Just look at what Médium João de Deus in Abadiânia, Goiás, Brasil is doing with this love energy - healing the wounded souls of people who go there to see him at the Casa de Dom Inácio. Many doctors and scientists from around the world go to Brasil for healing of themselves or family members or to try to get some insights into this healing phenomenon of Médium João de Deus.
Don Agustín “Viejo”
Similarly, Don Agustin “Viejo” spoke beautifully on this topic.
“El Curandero tiene que tener amor para curar, si no, no funciona pero asi corage para confrontror la enfermedad.”
“El Curandero / healer have to have love to cure, if no, no function, with love the Curandero have courage to confront the illness.”
From my experiences, it is crucial importance for those to ponder on this for a while, a Shaman can be “Darth Vader,” (as in the movie Star Trek, not of good character) normal in the day, but at night during Ayahuasca ceremony, under the influence of Ayahuasca becomes a different person, the personality changes to a “Brujo Negro” as if possessed by negative – Dark Energy Entity doing witchcraft. If there are helpers, they can also be different subjects too, under the influence of a spell and do bad things.
Here are some crucial facts to take into consideration when it comes to choosing a Shaman:
It is very possible that many died with such dark Shamans (Brujo Negro) from their toxic brew. Some of the Shamans may not have compassion, spirituality and operate as Eastern Spiritual Masters do. This is not denying that they do not have the knowledge on the plants and plant medicine.
Writings on the Internet, YouTube or an article in some books can be found with some of the Shamans in question, however, it is of crucial importance for one to know the facts, that this does not mean that the said Shaman is a good Curandero (healer), operating with pure compassion, love and spiritually in his heart and is working with the white light as a light worker.
There are tremendous benefits with Ayahuasca in terms of healing. It has been used for thousands of years by the Shamans and Curanderos in South America, to aid in healing the people in areas where they were no medical doctors.
There are also many good Shamans and Curanderos out there in the various parts of South America.
I am fortunate to have crossed paths with some of the best Shamans and Curanderos in South America – my gratitude goes to Don Agustín Rivas Vásquez, Don Agustín “Viejo,” Don Luis Panduro and Don Marcelino Nolorbe Taleccio of Perú. I have spent time with them in their jungle camps and visited them in their homes with their families.
